Website Development

What is your website for - is it to raise awareness of your business to attract bigger footfall or is it be another salesperson? is it an information only website, is it your whole business or is a bit all these things?

It's amazing the number of people who just have a website for the sake of it and then wonder why it doesn't work, either technically, visually or commercially.

That's why I can put 20 years of IT experience behind your website. I've been a senior systems analyst working as a consultant to major blue chip clients before leaping out into the world of freelance web development. My last project won a national marketing database of the year award back around 2002.

Wow. but what does that really mean?

It means I know what questions to ask and use my ears, eyes and brain to come up with what you want, not what I want to do.

It means I test things, I learn things and worry about things not working. It might seem a bit like paranoia but after single handedly looking after a £7m a year project, with possible legal action against my employer if it screws up, you tend to triple check stuff.

Let's start ticking.....

Yep, lets look at your business and find out what makes it tick, what makes you tick, what ticks you off and what ticks your boxes. No I don't turn up to meetings with a load of tick boxes, but let's be honest, you really don't want to know about the technical stuff, you just want it to work, look good and do what it is supposed to.

Am I human?

Yes. I've had a geek transplant and can communicate normally with real people. Although occassionally I've had relapses whilst at industry parties, generally I hold a normal conversation without using words like server-side scripting and discussing the intracacies of google sitemaps.

Do I know other humans?

I deal with a few other freelancers and some are definitely cupboard under the stairs people. Then there's the graphic designers and Flash designers. I'm not entirely sure what they eat and drink but it seems to work.

Website Design

What's the difference between design and development? everything.

Design is the look and feel
Development is the stuff that makes the design work.

I'm predominantly a developer but most folk like my designs because they are generally functional rather than unnecessary. Occasionally I have to whallop the designers I use with a wet kipper to get them to understand that not everyone will understand their thinking, but that is very rare. They are a talented bunch and when you want something a bit special I'd recommend the investment.

In due course I'll be launching a freelance graphic designers directory.
